The Loyalty Loop

The Evolution of Social Media - and How to Cure Your FOMO!

I followed a herd of VSCO girls onto TikTok on a muggy Monday in August 2019.

I was psyched. I felt like I was getting in on the ground floor of THE NEXT BIG THING.

Forbes had just published an article detailing how the burrito baron, Chipotle, had generated $1 MM in sales on the platform in one day.

"Damn," I thought to myself, "We're missing out on a massive opportunity to generate revenue on THE NEXT BIG THING."

Only, I wasn't missing out on anything (except a video of a dancing ferret.) TikTok was in the Adoption Phase.

That didn't stop me from wasting hours and hours trying to figure out how we could turn TikTok into a lead-gen machine.

Revenue generated from TikTok todate: $0.

Meanwhile, I stopped sending out this weekly email because I'd been spending all my creative juice on TikTok.

On October 19, 2020, I fell into the FOMO trap again.

Only this time, it was an invitation-only audio app called Clubhouse. But I wasn't invited.

My friend, Brian Fanzo, shared screenshots of the massive Clubhouse audience he was building. A marketer from London told me that Clubhouse would be "bigger than Twitter!"

I begged for an invitation to participate. Then spent weeks trying to figure out how Clubhouse adds value to my life.

It doesn't.

But instead of posting regularly on LinkedIn, I'd wasted hours hoping to BE the next big thing ON the next big thing.

Clubhouse has been stuck in the Adoption Phase of the New Media Life Cycle since December 27, 2020.

Lately, I've had a sinking feeling that I'm missing out on a NEW next big thing: NFTs.

Maybe for you, it's creator coins, blockchain, LinkedIn Live videos, podcasts, or WEB 3.0?

Whatever it is, I know we all suffer from digital media FOMO.

There IS a cure called The New Media Life Cycle.

So, this week on The Loyalty Loop, I'm breaking down exactly how you can use it to treat your digital marketing FOMO.

Yes, there's going to be another next big thing.

No, you won't miss out on it.

Instead, you can use a simple framework to cure your FOMO.

All you need is a free online tool and some logic. Finally, you'll be able to keep your team focused on the marketing methods that deliver tangible results.

More importantly, my framework addresses the one question we all wish we could answer today:

When should we get involved in The Next Big Thing?
